Designer Avni Trivedi is an expert in textiles. All of her designs use natural fabrics - handwoven cotton, bamboo, silk, and chiffon - made by local Indian artisans. Most recently she has taken her passion for South Asian handicraft and trademark organic dyes back to the call of nature.

Immersed in the local culture of her textile-rich home in Gujarat, Ms. Trivedi studied manufacturing under the instruction of her grandfather, the director of the Ahmedabad Textile Institute Research Association. Connected with the major research institutes in the country, he opened the doors of India's largest textile research association and her future interest in its niche, cottage industries.
Then, after relocating to Boston in 2010, Ms. Trivedi set out to design a women's contemporary collection, Avni Fashion, with the help of artisans across India. "Working with India is a different beast", she said in a recent visit to her studio on Beacon Hill. "Although I have family there, I wanted to ensure that my communication with India was very good". With her business sensibility she selected a team of regional specialists - melding rustic weaves from the west, refined handwoven wool from the north, embroidery from the east, and natural dyes from Bombay into one line.
Presenting the Spring/Summer 2012 collection, "A Midsummer Night's Dream", at Boston Fashion Week the designer comes rooted in her eco-conscious, artisanal heritage - using organic cotton, peace silk, and diaphanous silk layers naturally dyed in shades of marigold, violet, and teal. With inspiration taken from Shakespeare's woodland fairies, the ethereal drapes and soft silhouettes of her upcoming show promise to evoke "a sense of nature" in the "strong, almost untouchable" mythical creatures in her Boston debut under The Tent.
